OXFORD, Ohio - Senior Jamie Craft picked up a goal and two assists to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-0 win over Miami on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Ohio.
The Cardinals improve to 2-0-0 on the season with the win, marking the third such start for a Cardinal women's soccer team, all of them coming in consecutive order under current head coach Karen Ferguson who saw two different games in Sunday's match.
"I thought it was a tale of two halves, as we tried to play a little too direct in the first half. I was pleased that we kept the ball at our feet and utilized some very good passing to set up scoring opportunities in the second half, and that proved to be benficial."
"We made some adjustments at the beginning of the second half, that paid off for us," Ferguson added.
The match was scoreless through the first 45 minutes, with the Cardinals holding an 8-4 shot advantage in the first half.
Jen Avila, Craft and Monique Gjini each forced Miami keeper Shannon Chew to make saves in the first 15 minutes of the half, and the Redhawks countered by forcing Cardinal netminder Deana Waintraub to make three saves of her own in the first half, but neither team could break through.
In the 51st minute freshman Nikki Bonacorsi picked up her first collegiate point when she set up Craft's first goal of the season in what proved to be the game winner. Bonacorsi's touch put Craft in alone at the top of the 18, where the senior forward finished into the lower left corner.
Minutes after the goal the game was delayed for a little over an hour because of heavy rains and lightning.
After play resumed the Cards earned a corner in the 68th minute, and Gjini and Craft worked the ball to sophomore defender Mallory Lampson, who netted her first goal of the young season for a 2-0 Cardinal advantage.
Freshman Lindsey Fox picked up her first regular season goal as a Cardinal in the 85th minute to seal the Cardinal win.
Waintraub made three saves in the second half to help seal the sophomore's first shutout of the season and seventh on her Cardinal career, surpassing Molly Halloran (6.5 from 1989-'92) for fifth all-time.
Shots were even at 12 apiece in the second half, with four each from Craft and Gjini leading the Cardinals.
Krista Pace made two saves in the second half for Miami, giving up all three goals and taking the loss.
Louisville will next travel to Lexington for the UK Invitational which will include a match against Wright State on Friday at 5:00 p.m. ET and a Sunday meeting with host and instate rival Kentucky on Sunday at 2:30 in the first regular season meeting between the two since 1996.
The Cards return home on Sunday, September 10 to host Xavier at 1:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park, a match that will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by WHAS-TV and ICN-2.
