LONDON, Ont. - University of Louisville sophomore rower Kathryn Hagglund has been invited to the Canadian Rowing Team selection camp in London, Ont., in late June to compete for a spot on the national team. Hagglund, a London native, will try out for a seat on Canada's 8+, 4- or 2- boat.
The rowers invited to selection camp will be considered for regattas such as the World Under-23 Championships, the Commonwealth Rowing Championships, the World University Games Regatta, the Lucerne World Cup and the 2006 Rowing World Championships.
"It's encouraging to see Kathryn move to the next level, and the experience of being coached by the best in the business is priceless," said Cards' head coach Richard Ruggieri. "I'm sure the outcome will teach Kathryn a great deal about her rowing and the capacity to push to another level, both physically and mentally."
On June 11, Hagglund competed at the Canadian Speed Orders Regatta where she teamed with Michigan State's Anne Cowan to win the "D" Final of the 2- competition. The duo crossed the line with a time of 7 minutes, 54.9 seconds, good for 16th overall on time.
"With 11 Canadians on our roster for the 2006-07 season, it's our goal to push them to another level at both the club and national levels," Ruggieri said. "Over time, we would be proud to have an athlete represent their country in international competition in much the same way as (Louisville assistant) Coach Laurie Featherstone, who raced for Canada six times winning gold at the Pan Am and World University Games as well as a bronze at Worlds. Time, hard work and commitment will be the starting point for our athletes."
Hagglund spent most of the rowing season in the Cards' Varsity 8+ boat, which finished the 2006 season ranked No. 20 in the final USRowing/CRCA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll. Led by a second-place finish in the Varsity 8+ "B" Final, U of L finished third overall in the South Region at the NCAA Sprints on May 14.
