The University of Louisville's doubles team of Jakob Gustafsson and Jeremy Clark lost to Georgia's No. 20-ranked Strahinja Bobusic and Colin Purcell 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the NCAA doubles championship Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championship at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, California.
The senior duo of Gustafsson (Hollviken, Sweden) and Clark (Stanville, Ky.) finish with a 22-12 overall record. Gustafsson and Clark are currently ranked No. 26 in the nation and earned the BIG EAST's automatic bid to the championship, becoming the first Cardinal doubles team to compete in the NCAA doubles championship. The BIG EAST all-tournament doubles team selection was ranked as high as No. 19 in the ITA doubles rankings this season.
"Jakob and Jeremy showed flashes of brilliance today, but could not capitalize on some opportunities," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We've come close in two NCAA tournament appearances this year and while it's frustrating not to be able to come out ahead, it still doesn't diminish the accomplishments of our team. Jakob and Jeremy will go down as one of the best doubles teams in U of L history."
Louisville finished the 2006 season with a 19-8 overall record and at No. 27 in the ITA team rankings. The Cardinals won the 2006 BIG EAST championship and achieved a program-best No. 12 ranking during the season.
