STORRS, Conn. - - The No. 18-ranked University of Louisville softball team swept host Connecticut 6-1 and 12-0 in a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader Sunday. U of L improves to 26-5 (5-1 BIG EAST) while UConn drops to 15-17 (4-6).
"We were happy to come away with two conference wins today," said Louisville head coach Sandy Pearsall. "I was very pleased with the way we were swinging the bats aggressively and I thought Kady Garrick turned in a very nice pitching performance for us today."
In the opening game, the Cardinals took an early lead with three runs in the top of the first. Audrey Rendon led off the game by reaching second on a two-base error and took third on Candi Hicks' groundout. Courtney Moore walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Both runners scored on Lacy Wood's two-run double. Wood crossed the plate on Sarah Totten's RBI single to make it a 3-0 game.
The Huskies struck in the bottom of the fifth when Meghan Tierney ripped a two-out double to right center and came home when Jess Quan singled to make the score 3-1.
U of L added three more runs in the top of the seventh. Hicks drew a leadoff walk and Courtney Moore followed with a single and was lifted for pinch runner Brittney Counts. Wood delivered her second double of the game to score Hicks. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Michelle Vasquez sent Counts home to increase the lead to 5-1. Totten's single plated Wood to make it a 6-1 game.
Louisville's Catherine Bishop (17-2) went the distance, allowing one earned run on five hits and striking out six. She did not issue a walk in the game. Offensively, the Cards were led Moore who went 2 for 3 with a run. Wood finished the game 2 for 4 with two doubles and three RBI. Totten also went 2 for 4 with two RBI.
UConn starter Krista Micalczyk (7-8) took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits and striking out two in seven innings. Micah Truax led the Huskies with a 2 for 4, one run performance at the plate.
In the second game, the Cards jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first when Audrey Rendon led off the game with a single and took second on Hicks' sacrifice bunt to set up Moore's two run shot over the centerfield fence. Wood posted her third double of the day, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Totten's RBI single to make it a 3-0 game.
Louisville added five runs in the second. Kristi Cunningham led off the frame with a walk, stole second and moved to third on Rendon's infield single. Hicks walked to load the bases and Cunningham scored on Moore's sacrifice fly. Wood followed with a three-run homer to make it a 7-0 game. Totten walked, moved to second Kassie Stanfill's single and scored when Counts reached on an error to give the Cards an 8-0 lead.
The Cards took advantage of four hits and three UConn errors to put up a four spot in the third. Rendon, Moore, Wood and Vasquez each delivered singles and scored to make it a 12-0 game.
Kady Garrick (6-2) picked up the win for the Cardinals, scattering two hits and striking out five in the five inning shutout. She also did not issue a walk in the game. Rendon paced the Cardinals 11 hit performance by going 3 for 3 with three runs scored. Wood was 3 for 4 with four runs and three RBI. Moore was 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBI.
