LEXINGTON, Ky. - - The No. 21 ranked University of Louisville softball team defeated host Kentucky 4-1 Wednesday at the UK Softball Complex. The Cardinals improve to 31-8 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 21-29.
"I liked the aggressive style of play we showed today," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "That's our style of game and I hope we continue to play like that the rest of the season."
The Cards took an early 1-0 lead when Audrey Rendon led off the game with a bunt single, took second on Leslie Garland's sacrifice bunt and scored when Courtney Moore reached on an error.
The Wildcats responded in the bottom of the second when Ashley Fertic reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on an illegal pitch. Gina Florence's single sent Fertic to third and she came home on Megan Glenn's base hit to tie the game at 1-1.
Audrey Rendon took the first pitch of the third inning deep over the right field wall to give Louisville a 2-1 lead. Garland and Moore delivered back-to-back singles and scored when Michelle Vasquez reached on a two-base error to make it a 4-1 game.
Catherine Bishop (20-5) got the win, striking out four and giving up one hit in four innings of relief. Starter Kady Garrick surrendered one earned run on three hits in three innings. The Cards had five hits in the game and were led by Rendon's 2 for 4 two-run performance.
Kentucky's Amy Kendall (8-9) took the loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits and striking out five in five innings of relief. Meghan Cooper led the Wildcats offensively, going 2 for 3 at the plate.
U of L will close out the home season with two BIG EAST Conference doubleheaders this weekend. DePaul will visit Ulmer Stadium Friday at 4 p.m. The Cardinals will play host to Notre Dame Sunday at noon.
