
Softball Falls to Kentucky 3-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The No. 21 ranked University of Louisville softball team fell to visiting Kentucky 3-1 Wednesday evening at Ulmer Stadium.
The Cardinals took an early lead in the bottom of the first when Leslie Garland reached on an error and scored on Lacy Wood's double to make it a 1-0 game.
The Wildcats put up a three-spot in the top of the sixth when Lori Melchi led off the frame with a base hit and stole second. Meghan Cooper drew a one-out walk to set up Katie Campbell's two-run double. Campbell crossed the plate when Ashley Fertic reached on an error to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead.
The Cardinals had the tying run at the plate when Lacy Wood singled with one out in the sixth and Brittney Counts led off the bottom of the seventh with a base hit, but could not capitalize on the opportunities.
Louisville starter Catherine Bishop (17-5) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits and striking out three in 5.1 innings. Kady Garrick did not allow a hit and struck out four batters in 1.2 innings of relief. Offensively, the Cardinals had five hits in the game. Wood went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Counts was also 2 for 3.
Kentucky's Amy Kendall (8-8) got the win, allowing one hit and striking out three in 3.0 innings of relief. Samantha Allen picked up her first save of the year, giving up a hit in the seventh inning. Campbell went 1 for 3 with a run and two RBI. The Wildcats improve to 20-16 on the season.
The Cards (26-8, 5-3 BIG EAST) are back in action Friday at 4 p.m. when they play host to BIG EAST opponent Syracuse doubleheader at Ulmer Stadium. U of L will continue its homestand Sunday against Pittsburgh. That game will be produced by WHAS-TV and will air on a delayed basis on Insight Communications cable channel 2 on Monday, April 24 at 11 p.m. The announcers are Erik Waxler (play-by-play; new WHAS sports co-anchor) and former Cardinal catcher Lisa (McMillan) Pinkston.
