Cards Win 10 Event Titles at Oliver Nikoloff Invitational

CINCINNATI, Ohio - University of Louisville junior thrower Arthur Turland earned an NCAA regional qualifying mark in the hammer to lead the Cardinal men to a second place finish while the Cardinal women finished third overall led by the three event titles from the throwers at Saturday's Oliver Nikoloff Invitational at the University of Cincinnati's Gettler Stadium.
Overall, the Cardinal men scored 156 points to finish second to the host Bearcats with 183 points, while Eastern Michigan was third in the field of 10 teams with 125 points. The U of L women scored 124 points for third overall out of 12 teams while Eastern Michigan won the team title with 209.5 points. The Cardinal men and women combined to win 10 event titles.
"This was a highly competitive meet and we had some strong performances winning 10 event titles and earning another NCAA regional qualifier," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "It was also important for us to earn a couple of more BIG EAST qualifiers. Overall, it was a good meet and very competitive in every event."
Turland, a native of Kincardine, Ont., won the hammer with a personal best mark of 183 feet, 4 inches to earn a spot in a second event at the NCAA Mideast Regional on May 26-27 in Knoxville, Tenn. On March, 18, Turland qualified for the NCAA regional in the discus with a mark of 170-02 at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Through three outdoor events, the Cardinal men and women have a combined nine NCAA regional qualifiers.
Another strong performer for the Cardinal men was freshman Tony Belt who won three event titles, ran the anchor leg for the 4x100-meter relay team's third place finish and scored 36 points for U of L on the day. Belt, a native of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., won the high jump with a mark of 6-08.75, the long jump with a mark of 23-08.00 and the triple jump with a mark of 47-06.25, while teaming with Brad Keys, Bryan Webb and Robert Amedee for a time of 42.12 in the 4x100m relay.
Leading the way for the Cardinal women were throwers Emily Turland and ZeNai Savage who combined to win all three throwing events they competed in. Turland, a native of New Albany, Ind., won the discus with a mark of 150-04 and the hammer with a mark of 185-09, while also finishing fourth in the shot with a mark of 44-01.50. Savage, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., won the shot put with a mark of 46-00.00 and finished fifth in the hammer with a mark of 147-04.00.
U of L also added two more BIG EAST Championship qualifiers taking the total to 46 as P.J. Fox and Chris Danks finished first and second respectively in the 800m. Fox, a native of Hebron, Ind., earned his first win of the season with a time of 1:52.89, while Danks, a native of Florence, Ky., was second with a time of 1:52.95.
Rounding out the Cards list of individual winners on the day was junior Brandon Cook in the discus and senior Kelley Bowman in the high jump. Cook, a native of Borden, Ind., won the discus with a mark of 172-07, while Bowman, a native of Mt. Vernon, Ky., won the high jump with a mark of 5-07.00.
Up next, the Cards will compete at the prestigious Texas Relays scheduled for April 5-8 in Austin, Texas.
