
Belt Wins Long Jump on Day Three of Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas - University of Louisville freshman Tony Belt stayed unbeaten in the outdoor long jump this season and improved on his NCAA regional qualifying status while winning the Section "B" finals on Friday at the 79th edition of the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Belt, a native of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., earned a personal best mark of 24 feet, 9.25 inches to defeat a field of 18 other jumpers at the prestigious event. Belt, ranked ninth in the nation in the long jump entering this week, has won all three of his long jump competitions during the 2006 outdoor season and is unbeaten in all six outdoor jumps events (2-0 high jump, 1-0 triple jump).
Joining Belt with a pair of strong finishes on the third day of competition was freshman teammate Andre Black of Mobile, Ala., as he tied a school record and improved on his NCAA regional qualifying status with a sixth-place mark of 49-11.25 in the triple jump. Black, who entered the week ranked 15th in the nation in the triple jump, matched the school record in the triple jump set by Stanley </~nbsp>Tanyhill at the 1998 Conference USA Championships. Black opened his day with a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a personal best mark of 23-06.75.
Freshman Heather Trimiew was the third and final Cardinal athlete to compete in Texas on Friday finishing 38th in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.27 seconds. On Thursday, the native of Chattanooga, Tenn., finished ninth in the prelims of the 400-meter hurdles with a school record and NCAA regional qualifying mark of 59.54 seconds to advance to the finals set for Saturday at 1:15 p.m. ET.
Belt will also return to Myers Stadium on Saturday for the Section "A" finals of the high jump at 3 p.m. ET where he will face his toughest test of the season in any event. Belt, ranked third in the nation in the high jump entering the event with a mark of 7-03.25, will be joined in the elite national field by three-time (two indoor, one outdoor) NCAA high jump champion Jesse Williams of USC, currently the No. 1 ranked high jumper in the nation with a mark of 7-05.00.
Friday's Events at Indiana Relays Postponed Until Saturday Due to Weather
Friday's schedule of events at the Indiana Relays have been postponed until Saturday due to inclement weather in the Bloomington area and a complete event schedule will be held on Saturday at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University. Saturday's events are tentatively scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. ET and an updated schedule of events will be available as soon as possible at www.iuhoosiers.com.
It's a busy weekend for the Louisville track and field program as the Cards also have athletes competing Friday and Saturday at Eastern Illinois University's Big Blue Classic in Charleston, Ill.
