BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - The No. 21 ranked University of Louisville softball team defeated host Indiana 2-0 Tuesday at the IU Softball Field. The Cardinals improve to 13-2 on the season, while the Hoosiers fall to 5-8-1.
"I'm very pleased with our team's performance today," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "Catherine Bishop threw another solid game for us. We played well defensively and were able to get timely hitting against a very good Indiana pitching staff."
The Cardinals jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Lacy Wood singled and scored on Brooke McCrain's double.
Louisville added another run in the fourth when Courtney Moore led off with a single. Wood followed with a sacrifice bunt and was safe on a Hoosier error which sent Moore to third. McCrain walked to load the bases and Moore came home on Alma Navarrete's groundout to make it a 2-0 game.
The Cards had an opportunity to push more runs across in the sixth when Moore led off with a walk and moved to third on Wod's double. Pinch-hitter Kassie Stanfill walked to load the bases. Indiana pitcher Mariangee Bogado entered the game in relief and struck out the next three batters to get out of the jam.
Junior RHP Catherine Bishop (7-1) notched her second shutout of the season, striking out 10 and scattering three hits in seven innings. Offensively, the Cards had five hits with Wood's 2 for 2, one run performance leading the way.
IU starter Megan Roark (3-4) took the loss, allowing five hits and striking out seven in 5.0 innings. Bogado struck out four and gave up a walk in 2.0 innings of relief.
U of L will return to the Hoosier State for the Evansville Tournament March 11-12. They will face Ohio State Saturday at 11 a.m. and Evansville at 3 p.m.
