The University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to host Missouri in the fourth and final meet of the Mizzou Extravaganza.
The men fell 165-59, and finished fourth in Sunday's invitational. Missouri was first with 497 points. Southern Illinois was second with 418 points, followed by Iowa with 357, Louisville with 332 and Drury with 246. The Cardinals swam a dual meet with Missouri concurrently with the Invitational going on.
The 25th-ranked Missouri women outscored Louisville, 125-99, and took the women's side of the invitational with 494 points. Following the Tiger women were Louisville with 451 points, Iowa with 352, SIU with 332 and Drury with 227.
"There was a lot of racing this weekend with kids swimming 12 races in three days, which will be excellent preparation for the BIG EAST Championships down the line," said Arthur Albiero. "The women only lost by 26 points to a very talented Missouri team and that will be such a confidence builder for us."
U of L served notice that even after three prior meets in the previous two days, they were going to battle Missouri. Both the women's and men's 400-medley relay teams were just outtouched by hundredths of a second. Karen Criss, Heather Meng, Johanna Nyysti and Melanie Greyling were in hot pursuit of the nationally ranked Tigers. The men's foursome of Andrei Teudean, Chris Lindauer, Matt Maley and Carlos Van Isschot were just less than five-tenths of a second behind Missouri's A relay.
To add an exclamation point, in the very next race, Amanda Henleben set a new school record in the 1000-free with a time of 10:12.58, beating the old mark by four seconds.
In the 50-free, Anna Dishuck beat Missouri's best sprinter for first. Leslie VanWinkle was first in the 200-IM with a swim of 2:04.91. Danny Keeling had a strong showing in the 200-IM with a second place, just a second behind Mizzou's Bryan Difford. Adam Madarassy surged to a first in the 200-fly for the Cardinals. Leslie VanWinkle scored first place points in the dual meet in the 100-free beating out two fast Tiger sprinters.
Larissa Niehoff had a strong effort in the 200-back with Karen Criss right behind her to both score for the Cardinals. Andrei Teudean touched second behind Missouri in the 200-back, with Chris Pinkston holding on for fourth. Amanda Henleben continued to be a consistent point-producer with a second in the 500-free. Ashley Jackson held on for fourth in the dual meet.
Heather Meng cruised to a first in the 200-breast with a time of 2:19.85. Johanna Nyysti hung in for fourth place to add points. The 400-freestyle relay was won by the women led off by Leslie VanWinkle, followed by Anna Dishuck, Liz Halet with Melanie Greyling as anchor.
