
Javelet Named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - University of Louisville senior midfielder Jessica Javelet was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year as announced at the league awards banquet Friday night. Junior forward Janelle Avila joined Javelet on the all-BIG EAST first team. Senior midfielders Lisa Wasser and Jen Kastelic, sophomore defender Courtney Shepstone and junior goalkeeper Marie-Claire Heller were selected to the second team. BIG EAST field hockey regular season co-champions Louisville and Providence were also honored at the banquet. The first and second teams and individual awards were voted on by the league's seven head coaches, who could not vote for players on their own teams.
Javelet (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.), who was named BIG EAST Offensive Co-Player of the Year in 2005, was the sole recipient of the award this year after leading the team with 18 goals and 46 points and was named Offensive Player of the Week twice and Defensive Player of the Week once. In league play, Javelet notched seven goals and four assists. The two-time All-American owns Louisville's career records for goals (69), assists (38) and points (176). She also holds three single-season records: goals (30), assists (14), points (74) and two single-game records- goals (5) and points (12). This marks the third straight year Javelet has earned all-conference honors.
Avila, a three-year starter from North Kingstown, R.I., is second on the team with 26 points (7G, 12A). She was a first team All-Conference team and All-West Region team member in 2005. Avila is currently second on the school's career points list with 90 and stands at third with 33 career goals.
Heller, a three-year starter from Chapel Hill, N.C., has posted a 1.92 goals against average. She is second in the conference with 113 saves and a .764 save percentage.
Kastelic, a four-year starter from Hummelstown, Pa., is having a career-best season with eight goals, six assists and 22 points to place her fourth on the team in scoring.
Shepstone, a sophomore from New South Wales, Australia, stepped into a starting role this season and was a valuable member of the Cardinal defense, starting 18 games in the backfield.
Wasser, a senior from Dallas, Pa., has posted a career-best nine goals and stands third on the team with 25 points. She has started every game in her career, is a three-time team captain. Wasser was named to the All-West Region team in 2004 and has earned all-conference honors for three straight years.
The 14th-ranked Cardinals (12-7) are the top seed in the tournament and will face ninth-ranked, fourth-seeded Connecticut (17-3) Saturday at 1 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
