
Field Hockey Tames Tigers 4-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team defeated visiting Pacific 4-1 Thursday at Trager Stadium. The game featured a rematch of the 2004 NCAA play-in game in which the Tigers defeated the Cards 1-0 in overtime.
Pacific struck early when Vianney Campos delivered an unassisted goal just 3:28 into the game.
The Cardinals answered at the 15:18 mark when sophomore Janelle Avila connected on a penalty corner with assists from senior April White and junior Jen Kastelic to tie the game at 1-1.
Louisville capitalized on another penalty corner when senior Jen Payne netted an assist from junior Jessica Javelet to give the Cards a 2-1 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. Payne scored her second goal of the game on a Javelet feed to give Louisville a 3-1 with 37 seconds left in the half. The Cardinals outshot the Tigers 12-2 and held an 8-0 penalty corner advantage in the first half.
In the second half, Javelet tacked on another insurance goal with an assist from Avila at the 42:23 mark to give Louisville the 4-1 win. With Javelet's goal and two assists in the game, she now has 80 career points, tying the school's career points record held by former teammate Olivia Netzler.
"We were very excited to be able to play the team that ended our season last year," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "Our team was able to put aside the emotions of the rematch and execute our game plan. We had a lot of things to work on after last weekend, and I feel we really made some improvements to beat a good Pacific team tonight."
Louisville goalkeeper sophomore Marie-Claire Heller (4-1) got the win, playing 70:00 and allowing one goal. The Cards outshot the Tigers 24-3 and held a 16-1 lead in penalty corners in the game. Pacific goalkeeper Valerie Niles (2-5) posted 12 saves in the loss. The Tigers fall to 2-5 on the season.
U of L (4-1) will play host to Appalachian State (1-4) Saturday, Sept. 10 at noon at Trager Stadium.
