The Cardinals wasted no time getting on the scoreboard when Avila's pass from corner of the cage found Javelet who scored just 33 seconds into the game giving Louisville a 1-0 lead. Avila connected on a Javelet assist at the 12:50 mark to increase the lead to 2-0. At halftime, the Cards led 2-0, outshooting the Mountaineers 14-1 and holding 10-0 advantage in penalty corners in the first half.
In the second half, Avila delivered an unassisted goal at the 50:13 mark in the game. The Javelet-Avila combination returned less than two minutes later when Javelet scored on Avila's assist for the 4-0 final score.
Louisville sophomore goalkeeper Marie-Claire Heller (5-1) had one save in her first shutout of the season. The Cardinals outshot the Mountaineers 27-3 and had 17 penalty corners to ASU's one.
Appalachian State goalkeeper Kate Ryna (1-5) registered 15 stops in 52 minutes. Mikayla Paulson entered the game with 12 minutes remaining and picked up three saves. The Mountaineers fall to 1-5 on the season and will face Pacific Sunday at Trager Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
"I was really impressed with Appalachian State's organization and their defense, but we found ways to score" said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "Our team has sticking to the game plan consistently. We have been able to substitute freely without disrupting our rhythm and our younger players have been gaining valuable experience."
Louisville (5-1) will travel to Columbus, Ohio to play Ohio State Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 3 p.m.
