
Field Hockey Tops Boston 4-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Boston University 4-1 in the consolation game of the Women 4 Women Champions Tournament Sunday at Trager Stadium.
The teams played through 22 scoreless minutes before Boston's Pam Spuehler broke through with an unassisted goal at the 22:35 mark in the first half. The Terriers took the 1-0 lead into halftime, outshooting the Cards 6-4 and holding a 4-0 penalty corner advantage in the first half.
Five minutes into the second half, Louisville capitalized on a penalty corner as junior Jen Kastelic connected on an assist from junior Jessica Javelet to tie the game at 1-1. Three minutes later, Javelet netted an unassisted goal to pull the Cards ahead 2-1. Senior Jen Payne added an insurance goal at the 51:41 mark in the game, making the score 3-1. Javelet tallied her second goal of the game on a penalty corner assist from senior Rachel Overton for the final score of 4-1.
The Cardinals outshot the Terriers 17-12 in the game, while Boston held a 7-5 edge in penalty corners. Louisville goalkeeper sophomore Marie-Claire Heller (1-1) collected four saves. Boston's Patty Morrison (0-2) had seven stops in the contest. Boston falls to 0-2 on the season.
Louisville (1-1) will play host to Missouri State Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
In the championship game of the Women 4 Women Champions Tournament, Nicole Dudek scored twice and added an assist as Duke defeated Michigan State 3-0. The Blue Devils improve to 2-0, while the Spartans fall to 1-1 on the season.
"This was a great tournament to host," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "The first weekend of the season also presented some very hot weather conditions, yet the quality of hockey from all four teams was exceptional."
