
Field hockey tops Missouri State 6-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Sophomore Janelle Avila scored two goals and senior Rachel Overton had three assists as the University of Louisville field hockey team rolled to a 6-1 win over visiting Missouri State Friday at Trager Stadium.
The Cards jumped to a 1-0 lead less than nine minutes into the game when Avila netted a pass from senior Rachel Overton at the 8:44 mark. Ten minutes later, junior Jessica Javelet sent a pass from the left corner of the cage to freshman Lauren Schaefer who posted her first collegiate goal, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage. Avila combined with Overton again for her second goal of the game to increase the lead to 3-0 at the 31:05 mark.
Missouri State quickly responded when Melissa Millan put the Bears on the board less than a minute later.
Louisville struck again with less than three minutes remaining in the first half when Javelet scored on an Overton pass to give the Cards a 4-1 halftime lead. The Cardinals outshot the Bears 13-3 and held a 3-2 penalty corner edge in the first half.
The Cards tacked on another goal when junior Carrie Jackson connected Javelet's pass during a penalty corner at the 50:22 mark. Junior Jen Kastelic capped the scoring when she converted a penalty stroke less than two minutes later.
"I am so pleased that our team executed the game plan and we played consistently through all of our substitutions," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "Missouri State is a good team and they will get stronger as the season goes on, but we were playing well both offensively and defensively today."
Louisville goalkeeper sophomore Marie-Claire Heller (2-1) collected one save in the win. Missouri State goalkeeper Kim Kinsella posted 14 stops in the game. The Cards outshot the Bears 28-4 and held an 8-2 penalty corner advantage. Missouri State (0-3) will play LaSalle (0-2) Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
The Cardinals (2-1) will play host to LaSalle (0-2) Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
