
Field Hockey Falls to Duke 7-0 in Season Opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team opened the 2005 season with a 7-0 loss to 2004 NCAA runner-up Duke in the Women 4 Women Champions Tournament Saturday at Trager Stadium. The Blue Devils finished the 2004 season ranked fourth in the National Field Hockey Coaches Assocation poll. The Cardinals will play Boston in the consolation game Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
Duke jumped to an early lead when Marian Dickinson connected on a pass from Cara-Lynn Lopresti just 3:44 into the game. Dickinson dished out an assist to Nicole Dudek to put the Blue Devils up 2-0 at the 9:04 mark. Duke's Katie Grant delivered an unassisted goal at the 15:15 mark to increase the lead to 3-0. With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, the Blue Devils capitalized on a penalty corner as Ashley Pultorak scored with an assist from Amy Stopford to cap the first half scoring at 4-0.
Dickinson scored two quick goals in the second half - the first on a Hilary Linton assist and the second unassisted - to put the Blue Devils up 6-0. Stopford converted on a penalty stroke to complete the scoring for a final tally of 7-0.
The Blue Devils outshot the Cardinals 20-11 and held a 7-5 penalty corner advantage. Ten of Louisville's 11 shots in the game were stopped by Duke goalkeeper Caitlin Williams (1-0) as she collected 10 saves in the shutout. Louisville's Marie-Claire Heller registered seven saves.
Duke (1-0) will face Michigan State (1-0) in the championship game at 2 p.m.. The Cardinals (0-1) will play Boston (0-1) in the consolation game Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Trager Stadium. In the opening game of the tournament, Michigan State outlasted Boston University 4-3 in overtime.
