LOUISVILLE, KY - The University of Kentucky scored a pair of goals in a three-minute span in the second half to give the Wildcats a 2-0 win over the University of Louisville in the final exhibition match of the preseason for both teams Thursday.
The Cards and the Cats battled to a scoreless first half. Kentucky outshot U of L 11-2 in the half. Cardinal freshman goalkeeper Deana Waintraub made seven saves in the first stanza.
UK picked up a goal by Rachel Ulrich in the 71st minute on a rebound off a Nicola Holdsworth shot that ricocheted off the crossbar.
At 72:58 Betsy Holbrook tucked a ball inside the near post for the Cats to close the scoring.
"I don't think we played well in the first 20-25 minutes, but after we settled down, things got a bit better," observed U of L Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"We did get a look at a lot of young players, and their experience in these exhibition games will be invaluable as the season goes on," Ferguson added.
The Cardinals had five true freshman and four sophomores in the starting lineup, including true freshman Mallory Lampson.
"In the second half I thought we came out with a lot of intensity and created a lot of opportunities. We just couldn't finish."
The Cards outshot the Cats 7-5 in the second half. Freshman Shannon Smith paced U of L with three shots, while sophomore Monique Gjini had two.
Louisville will open the regular season, its first in the BIG EAST, on August 26th at 7:00 p.m. against Butler at Cardinal Park, where admission is free.
Louisville posted a 12-5-3 record in 2004, the best in school history.
