The University of Louisville women's swim team won ten of 13 events to upset West Virginia 156-88 in Morgantown in BIG EAST swimming action. The U of L men were edged 141-90 despite winning three events.
"It is toughto go into someone else's house and pull off a win," said U of L coach Arhur Albiero. "It wasn't always pretty but we managed to touch first in the close ones."
U of L had three double winners led by freshman Ashley Jackson's win in the 1000-free and the 500-free. She swam a 5:06.78 for the 500 win. Leslie Van Winkle won the 200-free in 1:51.40 and the 100-free in 52.08. Abby Miller was another double winner with firsts in the 400-IM and 200-fly. The Cardinals got a boost in the points when Marianne Bradford swept the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.
The Cardinal relay teams continue to rack up points when the women won both relays. U of L took the 400-medley relay when Lauren Grimes, Heather Meng, Johanna Nyysti and Melanie Greyling combined for the win. In the 400-free relay, Van Winkle, Leigh Smith, Rebecca Clark and Jenny Schimenti came from behind to touch first.
The men had double winner Robbie Lewis who won the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Andrei Teudean won the 200-back in 1:53.35. Vali Preda, swimming in his first collegiate meet, won the 200 breast in 2:05.54.
"We swam well but it is a tough place to go and compete. They definitely have the home 'court' advantage. The men swam tough but in the end, their depth prevailed."
