
Field Hockey Falls to Wake Forest 6-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- - The University of Louisville field hockey team fell to top-ranked and defending national champion Wake Forest 6-1 at Kentner Stadium Sunday.
Senior Suzanne Irwin put Louisville on the board with a goal just five minutes into the match. Janelle Avila was credited with the assist as the Cards took a 1-0 lead.
Wake's Kristi Harshman found Tamar Meijer three minutes later to knot the score at one.
Louisville swapped goalkeepers before Kelly Dostal set up for a Deacon penalty stroke. The senior All-American sent one flying into the right corner to make it a 2-1 game.
With starting goalkeeper sophomore Jenna Halulko back in the cage for the Cardinals, Claire Lawhon scored with just over a minute left in the half to give Wake a 3-1 halftime advantage.
Dostal connected with Meijer for Deacon goal number four at the 39:25 mark. On the third Deacon penalty corner of the game, Whitten inbounded to Maeke Boreel who chipped to Dostal for her second goal of the contest. Meijer would complete the hat trick at the 51:09 mark on an assist from Haley Scott.
Wake Forest outshot the Cardinals 25-3 and held a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Halulko (1-4) allowed two goals and collected two save in 35:00. Freshman Marie-Claire Heller had four saves and allowed four goals in 35:00. Wake's Kristina Gagliardi pocketed one save on the afternoon and was credited with the win. Wake Forest improves to 6-1.
The Cardinals (1-4) will finally play their home opener when they host Indiana on Friday, Sept. 17 at 3:00 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
