LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team was edged by No. 17 Indiana 2-1 in the Cardinals' home opener Friday at Trager Stadium. Indiana improves to 6-1 on the season while U of L falls to 1-5.
The Hoosiers took advantage of their only shot on goal in the first half when Meredith Brown capitalized on a penalty corner with assists from Lesley Wiler and Lydia Schrott just 5:01 into the game. Indiana took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Louisville senior Suzanne Irwin connected on sophomore Jessica Javelet's shot from the top of the circle to tie the game at 1-1 with less than three minutes remaining in regulation.
The teams entered a 15 minute sudden-victory overtime period. Indiana rattled off four shots in the first ten minutes of overtime before Jodi Murphy delivered from the top of the circle into the right side of the cage to give the Hoosiers the 2-1 win with just under five minutes remaining in the period.
The Cardinals outshot the Hoosiers 9-7 and held a 6-2 penalty corner advantage. IU goalkeeper Katie Kanara collected four saves in 80:03 minutes. Louisville freshman goalie Marie-Claire Heller entered the game in the second half and posted three saves - all in overtime- but took the loss, allowing one goal in 45:03 minutes played. Sophomore Jenna Haluko started the contest in the cage and allowed one goal.
U of L will play William & Mary (4-2) Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1:00 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
