LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team defeated William & Mary 2-1 on Sunday, Sept. 19 at Trager Stadium.
Senior Suzanne Irwin scored the Cards' first goal at the 9:26 mark in the first half. Irwin collected a rebound from sophmore Lisa Wasser's shot and sent the ball past William & Mary's goalkeeper Heather Kibbee to give Louisville a 1-0 lead.
The Tribe's Gina Cimarelli fought through the U of L defense and delivered an unassisted goal to tie the game at 1-1 with 1:15 remaining in the first half.
The game remained tied until midway through the second half when Irwin lifted the ball into the cage to give the Cardinals the 2-1 victory.
U of L freshman goalkeeper Marie-Claire Heller registered six saves and allowed only one goal in her first collegiate win. The Tribe's Kibbee had four saves and allowed two goals in the game. William & Mary outshot the Cards 13-8 and held an 8-3 penalty corner advantage. The Tribe falls to 5-3 on the season.
Louisville (2-5) will open Mid-American Conference play at Ball-State on Friday, Sept. 24 at 3:00 p.m.
