LOUISVILLE, KY - The University of Louisville women's soccer team exploded for six second-half goals in a 7-0 route of Evansville Friday at Cardinal Park.
"We had a bit of a competitive letdown in the first half, and we didn't do some of the things we are capable of doing," observed U of L Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"The staff challenged the team at half and they rose to the occasion," Ferguson added.
Freshman Monique Gjini took a perfect feed from senior Lisa Martin and beat Evansville keeper Jessica Sumner low and to the left for Gjini's second goal of the season in the 17th minute for a 1-0 Cardinal lead.
The Cards(3-1-0) held a 12-1 edge in shots during the first half with their 1-0 advantage.
Louisville connected for two quick goals to open the second half and take a commanding 3-0 lead.
Gjini tallied her second of the match 2:25 into the stanza on a near mirror image of her first goal, this time from sophomore Lauren Podvin.
"That was just a great ball, and if I can't finish that I don't deserve to be on the team," Gjini said.
Podvin got into the act with her fourth on the year on a nice pass from senior Mandy Rost just over two minutes later.
In the 59th minute, sophomore Jamie Craft blasted home her third of the season on a pass from Podvin to make it 4-0.
Rost scored her first of the season on a nice feed from Craft at the 66:27 mark, and freshman Shannon Smith picked up her first career goal on a feed from Hollie Minogue in the 82nd minute.
Minogue then scored her first of the season at 88:17 with freshman Laura Walker and Smith earning the assists for the final margin.
The 7-0 win was the largest margin of victory and highest goal total in a regular season match since October 28, 1992 when they matched the totals in a win over Southern Indiana.
The final numbers on the board had the Cards outshooting the Aces(0-5-0) 26-4. Gjini, Podvin and Craft each had five shots in the match.
Freshman Tiffany Hansen earned the win, playing the first 64 minutes of the match. Senior Meredith Miller played the final 25:52, making two saves.
The Cards hit the road on Tuesday when they travel to face Murray State at 4:00 p.m. before opening a home weekend Friday, hosting Wright State at 7:00 p.m. at Cardinal Park. Louisville will face Xavier Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Admission is free, and all home matches can be viewed on-line via Gametracker.
