EAST LANSING, Mich. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team fell to Delaware 1-0 in overtime Sunday at the Champions Challenge hosted by Michigan State. The teams played a scoreless first half with the Cards outshooting the Blue Hens 6-3. The second half saw a defensive stand by both teams in which U of L outshot Delaware 3-1 and each team had one penalty corner. Still scoreless, the game moved to a sudden-victory overtime in which the Blue Hens' Erica LaBar delivered the only goal of the game with less than three minutes remaining in the first overtime period. The Cardinals outshot Delaware 9-7, but the Blue Hens held a 5-4 penalty corner advantage. Louisville sophomore goalkeeper Jenna Halulko had three saves in 77:54 minute played. Delaware's Megan Allen had five stops. "We played very well today. This was a great challenge for young attack to come against a solid defensive team like Delaware," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "We had some opportunities we weren't able to capitalize on, but the team will learn and continue to improve." "This weekend's tournament showcased combinations of four teams with four different styles of hockey," said Bustin. "The competition was great which was why we went there. We look forward to hosting this tournament at Trager Stadium next year." U of L (0-2) will travel to the West Coast to play California on Saturday, Sept. 4 and Stanford on Sunday, Sept. 5, both games are at 4:00 p.m. (EDT).
