
Field Hockey Edges California 2-1 in Overtime

BERKELEY, Calif. - - University of Louisville sophomore Jessica Javelet scored one minute, three seconds into the first overtime period to help the Cardinals defeat the California field hockey team, 2-1, on Saturday at Maxwell Family Field. The victory gave Louisville (1-2) its first win of the season while the Golden Bears took their first loss (3-1). Cal forward Valentina Godfrid scored the Bears' lone goal of the match at 2:18 into the first half. Javelet, who has scored all three of Louisville's goals this season, evened the score at 17:41 on a penalty corner with assists from Kimberly Hughes and April White. The teams took the 1-1 tie into halftime. The Bears played shorthanded the final five minutes of regulation as Godfrid was shown a yellow card at 65:34. Earlier in the match she acquired a green card. With the game still knotted at 1-1, the teams entered a sudden-victory overtime period. Javelet's game-winner came off of a free hit by Hughes. California outshot the Cardinals 13-6 and held a 7-2 penalty corner advantage in the contest. Louisville sophomore goalkeeper Jenna Halulko (1-2) collected eight saves in her first collegiate win. The Cardinals close out their West Coast swing at Stanford on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 4:00 p.m. (EDT)
