EAST LANSING, Mich. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team opened the 2004 season with a 2-1 loss to 2003 NCAA runner-up Duke Saturday at the Champions Challenge hosted by Michigan State. Duke got on the scoreboard eight minutes into the first half when Gracie Sorbello connected on a penalty corner with assists from Johanna Bischof and Katie Grant . The Blue Devils took advantage of another penalty corner when Sorbello scored again with assists from Bischof and Grant to give Duke a 2-0 lead with 19:25 remaining in the half. U of L responded when sophomore Jessica Javelet netted a pass from junior April White, to make it a 2-1 game with 9:39 remaining in the first half. Despite a flurry of penalty corners for each team in the second half, the score remained 2-1. Louisville's sophomore goalkeeper Jenna Halulko collected eight saves in her first collegiate start. Duke's Christy Morgan had one stop. The Blue Devils outshot the Cardinals 14-4 and held a 10-6 penalty corner advantage. "I am extremely happy with the effort our team gave in our first game of the season and against a team that competed for the national championship last year, " said Louisville head coach Pam Bustin. "We have a young, talented team and a very exciting season ahead of us." U of L (0-1) will play Delaware (0-1) in the consolation game on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. The Blue Hens fell to host Michigan State 1-0 in the second game of the Champions Challenge Saturday.
