SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Louisville women's rowing team made a push in the final 500 meters to finish second in Heat 3 of the Cal Cup Eight race and advanced to Sunday's Grand Final at the San Diego Crew Classic Saturday morning at Bishop Bay.
The Cardinals placed second in the seven-boat race with a time of 6:57.39, the fourth fastest time of the day and just three seconds behind winner UCLA (6:54.25). The top two finishers in the three heats advanced to the Grand Final.
Midway through the 2000-meter race and in fifth place, the Cardinals began to make their move. With 500 meters to go and still in third place, U of L had a burst of speed to finish the final stretch in 1:41.50, the fastest 500-meter split in the last 1500 meters of the race.
"We are pleased to be in the finals," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "This is an extremely deep field, and to advance to the final six is a tribute to our rowers. They really turned it on down the stretch when they needed the extra effort."
The Cardinal boat was comprised of Leslie Walters, Allison Kemphaus, Amelia Buhts, Lisa Terreberry, Carmen Noltemeyer, Nicole Alderson, Jessica Grigsby, Stephanie George and Christy Ochsner.
U of L will be joined by UCLA, Clemson, Loyola, Miami and the U.S. Naval Academy in Sunday's Grand Final. The race is scheduled to begin at 1:50 local time.
