LOUISVILLE, Ky. - For the third consecutive year, the University of Louisville rowing team earned the title as Kentucky State Champions as the Cardinals swept Murray State at the Derby Collegiate Rowing Championships Sunday on the Ohio River.
Louisville has won all 12 races contested between the two schools in the event's three-year history, winning one race in 2002, five races last year and the six 500-meter races today. Sunday's event was the largest ever as 1,012 fans cheered on both teams down on the Waterfront.
"This was a tremendous day for Louisville rowing," said fourth-year head coach Richard Ruggieri. "More than 1,000 fans turned out to watch these two teams battle it out on the river and I couldn't be any happier. Our sport is still growing in this area, and to have this type of turnout says a lot about this community and how it supports its local athletes." Louisville won all three Varsity 8+ races, winning the first one by 4.87 seconds, the second one by 3.23 seconds and the final one by 7.89 seconds.
In the shell for the Cardinals was Leslie Walters, Allison Kemphaus, Amelia Buhts, Lisa Terreberry, Carmen Noltemeyer, Nicole Alderson, Jessica Grigsby, Stephanie George and coxswain Christy Ochsner.
In the Second Varsity 8+ races, Louisville defeated the Racers by times of 13.40 seconds, 11.50 seconds and 12.48 seconds.
Coxswain Diana Golub led the crew of Colleen Blaschuk, Beth Daunhauer, Brooke Spence, Mandy Moore, Dana Osoffsky, Karen Bramer, Olivia Brittain and Melissa Grieshaber.
In the Novice 8+ Exhibition races, the Louisville Red team topped the Louisville Black team in three tightly-contested races. Two of three races were decided by less than 0.5 seconds, while the final one was won by 1.64 seconds.
The Red team was made up of coxswain Jenna Sample, Martha Shults, Katie Prince, Becky Popham, Erica Boils, Meg Densmore, Amy Isaacs, Adrienne Roman and Emi Itabashi (Murray State).
In the Black boat was coxswain Devon Scott, Jen Allen, Stephanie Baker, Charly Day, Denise Borders, Emily Cook (Murray State), Nicole Erwin (Murray State), Sarah Millican and Dena Scott.
"I am extremely pleased with the way we rowed today," said Ruggieri. "The wins today along with the gold medal performances from last weekend at the SIRA Championships will give us confidence as we prepare for the NCAA Regionals."
The Cardinals will travel to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the NCAA Southern Regional Championships on May 15-16.
