
Softball Splits with Evansville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Junior Aja Sherman posted her third no-hitter of the season as the University of Louisville softball team beat visiting Evansville 1-0 in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Ulmer Stadium. Evansville took the second game 4-2 as the Cards played their final home game of the regular season.
In the first game, U of L scored the only run in the contest in the first inning when Shannon Nord led off the game with a single. Sara Bausher and Lacy Wood drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Courtney Moore's bases-loaded walk sent Nord home to give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead.
Sherman (15-3) held the Aces hitless through seven innings, matching her career high for strikeouts with 11 and walking four batters. Offensively, the Cards had three hits in the game. Nord was 1-for-2 with a run. Candi Hicks and Wood each had a hit.
Evansville's Katie Markle (15-8) took the loss, allowing one earned run on three hits and striking out five in six innings.
The Aces took the early lead in the nightcap, scoring one run in the first.Emily Winters led off with a base hit, moved to second on a single by Ashley Werner and came home on Alicia Laraway's RBI single.
Evansville added another run in the fourth when Werner led off with a triple. Laraway drew a walk and stole second, a Cardinal error allowed Werner to score, making it a 2-0 game.
The Aces tacked on two more runs in the sixth when Laraway doubled and scored on Natalie Heldt's single up the middle. Heldt took second on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on a single by Kim Nichols.
Wood's solo home run in the home half of the inning averted the shutout, making the score 4-1.
The Cardinals threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Audrey Rendon delivered a two-out single and scored on Nord's double to make it a 4-2 game.
Louisville's Kady Garrick (16-5) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on five hits and striking out two in four innings. The Cardinals had eight hits in the game and were led by Nord who was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a stolen base. Wood was 2-for-3 with a home run.
Evansville's Casey Clutch (17-7) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and striking out four in seven innings. Laraway finished 2-for-2 with a double, a run and an RBI. Werner was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run. The Aces improve to 35-16 on the season.
The teams will meet again in a single game when U of L (39-12, 19-2 C-USA) travels to Evansville on Wednesday, May 5 for a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
