Softball Tops Charlotte 4-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team defeated visiting Charlotte 4-1 to complete a three-game Conference USA sweep Sunday at Ulmer Stadium.
The Cardinals jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Candi Hicks singled, stole second and crossed the plate on Lacy Wood's base hit.
Louisville added two more runs in the second. Amy Summers drew a walk and Audrey Rendon and Shannon Nord delivered back-to-back infield hits to load the bases. Sara Bausher's two-run single sent Summers and Rendon home to it a 3-0 game.
U of L's final run came in the fifth when Bausher led off with a hit, moved to second on Wood's single and came home on a pinch-hit single by Jenn Skaggs.
Charlotte averted the shutout in the top of the seventh. Kaycie Jones drew a two-out walk and moved to second on Becky Holt's single. Karianne Huffstetler was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Jessica Moore's RBI single, making it a 4-1 game.
Louisville starter Aja Sherman (14-3) picked up the win, allowing one earned run on three hits and striking out five in seven innings. Offensively, the Cards had 10 hits in the game. Bausher was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Nord and Wood each finished with two hits in the contest.
Charlotte's Christy Murray (9-12) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits and striking out four in six innings. The 49ers fall to 18-25 (4-14 C-USA).
"I was please with the way we came to play - our offense and defense were both solid," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "Every conference game is important, especially as we head into the end of the regular season.
The Cardinals (38-11, 19-2) will close out the regular season against Evansville on Tuesday, April 27 at Ulmer Stadium. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.
