HOUSTON - - The University of Louisville softball team edged host Houston 2-1 to complete a three-game Conference USA sweep Sunday. The Cardinals' program-best winning streak improves to 13.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the second when Arelis Ferreris led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jenny Baker, took third on Jenny Johnson's groundout and scored on a double steal.
The Cardinals responded in the fourth when Lisa Estes walked and moved to second when Sherman reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and a passed ball allowed Estes to score, tying the game at 1-1. Audrey Rendon's single brought Sherman home to give Louisville a 2-1 lead.
Sherman (12-2) picked up her eighth straight win, allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out four in seven innings. Offensively, the Cardinals had five hits and were led by Shannon Nord, who was 2-for-4 in the game.
Houston starter Carla Kennimer (5-3) took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and striking out three in 3.2 innings.
"I was very happy with our defense, especially on a weekend when our offense and pitching struggled a bit," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "These were big conference wins against a very good Houston team, especially when we're playing on the road. We are likely to see them again at the conference tournament in a few weeks."
