Softball Falls to Illinois State 3-0

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - - The University of Louisville softball team lost to Illinois State 3-0 Friday at the Florida State Seminole Classic. The Cardinals were trailing Minnesota 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning when heavy rains forced the game to be halted. The game will resume at 10 a.m. Saturday.
After allowing one hit in the first and issuing a walk in the second, Louisville freshman pitcher Kady Garrick retired the next nine Redbird batters before Mandy Garner led off the sixth with a base hit. Carly Weinstein followed with a single and moved to second on a fielder's choice by Randi Patton to set up Emily Krueger's three-run homer to give the Redbirds a 3-0 lead.
U of L threatened in the bottom of the seventh as Sara Bausher led off with a single, Lacy Wood reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on a hit by Aja Sherman to bring the tying run to the plate, with two outs. Courtney Moore grounded out to end the inning.
Louisville's Garrick (0-1) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits in six innings. Illinois State starting pitcher Shannon Nicholson picked up the shutout win, scattering four hits over seven innings.

In the game against Minnesota, the Cardinals jumped to a 1-0 lead as Shannon Nord reached on a third-strike wild pitch, stole second and scored on a double by Lacy Wood.
U of L scored two more runs in the fifth as Audrey Rendon led off the inning with a triple and scored when Hicks reached on a fielder's choice. A double by Bausher brought Hicks across the plate to make it a 3-0 game.
Minnesota responded in the bottom of the fifth when Melissa Murnane drew a walk to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stefanie Watt. Tonya Mitchell's single loaded the bases to set up Hailee Nanchy's two-run single, pulling the Gophers within one run. Megan Higginbotham's base hit scored Mitchell and Nanchy to give Minnesota a 4-3 lead.
Heavy rain caused the game to be called with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Cardinals will play host Florida State Friday at 5 p.m. and Florida A&M at 7 p.m.
