
Softball Splits with North Carolina

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Louisville softball team fell to North Carolina 4-3 and beat the Tarheels 13-3 Sunday in the Oklahoma/Nike Classic.
In the first game, the Tarheels jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Anna Evans doubled and scored on an RBI double by Emily Price.
The Cardinals responded in the bottom half of the inning when Courtney Moore reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on Lacy Wood's single and came home on a hit by Lisa Estes to tie the game at 1-1.
Moore's two-out solo home run in the third gave Louisville a 2-1 lead.
North Carolina tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth when Michelle Hoffman reached on a fielder's choice, moved to third on Julia Bove's double and scored on a single by Joslin Higgins.
Louisville pulled ahead 3-2 in the fifth Candi Hicks reached on a bunt single, moved to second when Wood reached on an error, took third on Lisa Estes' walk and scored when Sara Bausher reached on a fielder's choice.
The Tarheels responded in the top of the seventh when Evans walked, moved to second when Jessica Young reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by Price to tie the game. Young came home when Jessica Graziano reached on an error to give North Carolina the 4-3 win.
U of L starter Catherine Bishop (1-3) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned on 10 hits and striking out three in seven innings. North Carolina's Ashley Allen picked up the win in relief, allowing one earned run on two hits in two innings.
Offensively, the Cardinals had nine hits in the game. Wood, Estes and Vasquez were each 2-for-3.
In the second game, U of L jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first when Moore blasted a triple down the right field line and scored on Wood's single. Wood moved to third on a single by Estes. Sara Bausher's two-run single brought Wood and Estes home.
The Tarheels answered in the bottom of the second when Hoffman led off with a single and moved to second on Bove's walk. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Higgins. Snipes reached and moved to third on a fielder's choice and a Cardinal error sent Hoffman and Bove home to pull North Carolina within one run. Snipes scored on a sacrifice fly by Dionne Street to tie the game at 3-3.
Louisville got back on top in the third when Estes singled and Bausher's two-run homer gave the Cards a 5-3 lead.
U of L added three more runs in the fourth when Shannon Nord drew a walk, stole second, moved to third on a single by Hicks. Moore's double scored Nord and Hicks. Moore came home on a hit by Estes to make it an 8-3 game.
Shannon Nord's home run in the fifth gave the Cardinals at 9-3 lead.
In the seventh inning, Rendon doubled to lead off the inning and scored when Nord reached on a three-base error. Moore and Wood drew back-to-back walks to load the bases-loaded. .Nord and Hicks scored on two more walks and pinch runner Jenn Skaggs come home on a single by Alma Navarrete to make it a 13-3 game.
Louisville starter Kady Garrick (6-1) posted her sixth straight win, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out three in seven innings. Offensively, the Cards had 14 hits and were led by Estes, who finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Bausher was 2-for-4 with a run and five RBI.
The Cardinals improve to 8-5 on the season.
