
Field Hockey Defeats Ohio 6-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Senior Kimberly Hughes scored three goals, registering her first career hat trick as the University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Mid-American Conference foe Ohio 6-1 Saturday at Trager Stadium.
Hughes put the Cardinals on the scoreboard on their first penalty corner when she sent a pass from sophomore Lisa Wasser into the top left corner of the net with 25:24 left in the first half.
Ten minutes later, Louisville sophomore Jessica Javelet delivered a shot which was stopped by Ohio goalkeeper Jennifer Cote. Senior Suzanne Irwin collected the rebound and sent the ball in the cage to increase the lead to 2-0
The Bobcats responded with an unassisted goal by Lindsay Rothenberger to pull Ohio within one goal with 9:04 remaining in the first half. The Cards took the 2-1 lead into halftime.
U of L's Wasser scored at the 41:47 mark in the contest, giving her team an insurance goal. Less than a minute later, Hughes added her second score of the game with an assist from Javelet to make the score 4-1.
Sophomore Jen Kastelic directed a shot into the upper right half of the goal to make it a 5-1 game at the 58:49 mark.
Hughes completed her hat trick with 0:50 remaining in the contest when she blasted a penalty corner shot into the cage to give U of L the 6-1 win. Kastelic and junior April White were credited with the assists.
Louisville outshot the Bobcats 14-8 and held an 8-5 penalty corner advantage. Cardinal goalkeeper freshman Marie-Claire Heller (4-3) allowed one goal and posted three saves in the game. Ohio's Cote (3-9) had eight stops in the contest. The Bobcats fall to 3-9 (1-2 MAC).
"I'm excited that, for the second consecutive game, we put together a whole game from top to bottom," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "This was great weekend for us to get back-to-back conference wins. I'm also happy with contribution of whole team."
Louisville (5-7, 3-1 MAC) will play host to Miami (Ohio) in a conference game on Friday, Oct. 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
