
Field Hockey Blanks Miami 7-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team posted its first shutout of the season with a 7-0 win over Mid-American Conference opponent Miami (Ohio) Friday, Oct. 8 at Trager Stadium.
Freshman Casey Diener began the scoring for the Cardinals when connected on a pass from senior Suzanne Irwin at the 9:32 mark in the game. Diener tipped a shot from sophomore Jessica Javelet with 3:57 remaining in the first half to give Louisville a 2-0 halftime lead.
Javelet dished another pass to senior Kimberly Hughes ten minutes into the second half to increase the lead to 3-0. Irwin deflected a shot from Javelet into the left corner of the cage to make it a 4-0 game at the 52:12 mark in the game.
Five minutes later, freshman Janelle Avila registered her first career goal when she netted a pass from Irwin to increase the lead to 5-0. Javelet scored on a rebound off of a Miami defender's stick at the 60:47 mark in the game. Javelet struck again with 3:22 remaining in the contest to give the Cardinals the 7-0 win.
The Cardinals outshot the RedHawks 20-0 and held an 8-0 penalty corner advantage. Louisville goalkeeper freshman Marie-Claire Heller (5-3) posted her first career shutout. Miami goalkeeper Kerri Orr (4-7) collected 12 saves in the contest. The RedHawks fall to 4-7, 0-4 MAC).
"We executed about fifty percent of our game plan in the first half," said Louisville head coach Pam Bustin. "We made adjustments and the whole team played well together in the second half."
U of L (6-7, 4-1) will play host to Southwest Missouri State on Sunday, Oct. 10 at Trager Stadium.
