
Field hockey falls to Southwest Missouri State 4-2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team lost to visiting Southwest Missouri State 4-2 Sunday at Trager Stadium.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard with 8:37 remaining in the first half as senior Suzanne Irwin connected on a shot from freshman Casey Diener to give U of L a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Bears tied the game eight minutes into the second half when Cami White scored on a feed from Amanda Hanson.
U of L regained the lead midway through the second half when freshman Missy Briery delivered on a pass from sophomore Jessica Javelet to give the Cards a 2-1 lead.
Southwest Missouri State responded less than three minutes later as Stephanie Wehrman scored off of a Gabby Gomez shot to tie the game at 2-2 with 15:43 remaining in the contest.
The Bears took a 3-2 lead with 5:25 left in the game when Liz Miyashita connected on a penalty corner shot by Gomez for the game-winner.
Southwest Missouri State was awarded a penalty corner in the final seconds of the game and Andrea Huskey tacked on the final goal for the 4-2 win with no time remaining on the clock. Melissa Behr was credited with the assist.
Louisville outshot Southwest Missouri State 12-6 and held a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners. Cardinal goalkeeper freshman Marie-Claire Heller posted two saves. Southwest Missouri goalkeeper Kim Kinsella collected five stops in the win. The Bears improve to 8-4 on the season.
U of L (6-8, 4-1, Mid-American Conference) will play host to MAC opponents Central Michigan on Friday, Oct. 15 at 3:00 p.m. and Ball State on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 1:00 p.m. for the final home game of the season.
