University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving won its dual meet with Conference USA rival Saint Louis, Saturday at Simon Recreation Center. The women won 168-132 over the Billikens, with the men winning by a 197-101 score.
"We have a lot of respect for Saint Louis and we had our work cut out for us," said first year coach Arthur Albiero. "I was very impressed with our efforts since we haven't raced in a dual format since early December. We had great efforts and a great team effort and it was close to the very end.
Louisville opened the meet with a win on the one-meter board by Marianne Bradford and a win in the 200-medley relay with the team of Larissa Niehoff, Heather Meng, Stephanie Wyatt and Emily Rabe. U of L then went 1-2 in the 1000-free and Lauren Bullock took first in the 200-free to open up a 46-28 lead.
SLU won the 100-back followed by a win in the 100-breast, which cut UofL's lead to 60-52. The Cardinals regained control with a win by Angie Nicolletta in the 200-fly, which led to the three-meter diving competition. UofL's Jerilyn Drummond was challenged by Tessa Truesdell, but prevailed with a score of 233.60 to Truesdell's mark of 232.90 Lauren Bullock had a first in the 500 free, Nicolletta had another win in the 100-fly.
"Angie had an awesome meet and it was great to see Lauren Seymour finally back and competiting," said Albiero. "Ann Isaacs also had two lifetime bests.
The Cards wrapped it up with a win in the 200-Free Relay when Bullock, Wyatt, Nicolletta and Rabe hit the wall first.
"I was very proud how we stuck together," said Albiero. "The team managed themselves quite well, taking responsibility for their warm-ups and cool-downs and cheering for their teammates."
On the men's side, Louisville pulled away much earlier in the meet by taking first and second places in five of the meet's first nine events. Included in the wins were firsts by Joseph Mittel (100-Back) Jon Farnham (100-free) Clay Jacobs (200-breast) and Matt Lees in the 500 free. The Cardinals relay teams both scored firsts as well. Sean Wilkinson swept the boards with a first in both 1-meter and 3-meter. Teammate Richard Marschner took second in both events as well for the Cardinal sweep.
"The men are much, much improved and Joseph Mittel's two wins in the 100- and 200-back is an example of that," said Albiero.
