The University of Louisville volleyball fans got their first glimpse of this year's No. 20 ranked Cardinal at Friday nights home opener. However, it was more like a quick glance as the Cardinals rolled over Alabama 3-0 in less than 90 minutes.
The Cardinals improved their record to 4-3 with the 30-15, 30-17, 30-25 win. Alabama drops to 2-6.
"When we play at home our crowd makes it very difficult for the opponent to gain any momentum," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin, of the 912 people in attendance. "Our crowd gets loud and really fires up the team. In 10 years, U of L has lost only 18 times in Cardinal Arena. This is 'our house'."
Sonja Percan led the Cardinals with 11 of her 20 swings going down for kills. Freshman Ana Yartseva hit .667 with six kills on nine attacks. Sophomore Jennifer Hoffman had four aces and four kills and four digs. Jennifer Craven and Zoya Filippova platooned at setter and combined for 40 assists. Libero Candace Cogan had six digs.
"We were able to get some of our underclassmen playing time after the starters put Alabama out of their game plan," said Yelin about his varying lineups.
U of L outhit the Tide .340 to .104 and notched 10 service aces.
The Cardinals take on Georgia Saturday at 2 p.m.
