SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Louisville women's rowing team finished fourth in the Women's Cal Cup Grand Final at the San Diego Crew Classic Sunday afternoon at Mission Bay.
The Cardinals, ranked 29th in the USRowing/CRCA national poll, finished the 2,000-meter race in 6:58.53, less than two seconds off the winning time. West Virginia won the 21-team competition with a time of 6:57.00, followed by Loyola (6:57.25), San Diego (6:58.35), Louisville and UCLA (7:01.12).
U of L's boat was comprised of Leslie Walters, Lisa Terreberry, Brooke Spence, Stephanie Hutton, Carmen Noltemeyer, Stephanie George, Jessica Grigsby, Allison Kemphaus and coxswain Christy Ochsner.
"This was an extremely tight race that came down to the end," said head coach Richard Ruggieri. "We are disappointed that we did not come away with the victory, but overall it was a good weekend. The competition was very tough and we just came up a little bit short."
The Cardinals return to action April 18th when they travel to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships.
