LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville rowing team officially joined the nation's elite programs Thursday as the Cardinals are ranked 29th in this year's opening USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll. The ranking is the first ever in the program's four-year history.
"It is an honor to be ranked and a testament to a small group of tenacious women working as one," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "We still need to move forward to reach our goals, but hopefully it will be an enjoyable ride."
The University of Washington is the top ranked team, followed by Princeton, Stanford, California-Berkeley and Michigan.
Louisville's Varsity Eight is comprised of Leslie Walters, Lisa Terreberry, Carmen Noltemeyer, Stephanie Hutton, Jessica Grigsby, Stephanie George, Brooke Spence and Allison Kemphaus. Christy Ochsner and Diana Golub have both served as the coxswain for the crew this spring.
The Cardinals return to action this weekend when they travel to California for the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay.
"San Diego will be a huge challenge," said Ruggieri. "The field is solid with many crews capable of taking the title. We need to find some more speed and focus on ourselves."
