
Softball Defeats UAB 11-2 in Five Innings

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team defeated Conference USA opponent UAB 11-2 in five innings Wednesday at Ulmer Stadium.
The Cardinals capitalized on five hits and three UAB errors to score seven runs in the second inning. Sara Bausher and Keola Calderon delivered back-to-back singles and Lisa Estes drew a walk to load the bases. Bausher scored when Lisa McMillan reached on a fielder's choice. Aja Sherman's fielder's choice and a UAB error allowed Estes to cross the plate, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. Michelle Vasquez reached on a fielder's choice, which sent McMillan home. Shannon Nord reached on another Blazer miscue to load the bases. A three-run single by Nicole Sparks scored Sherman, Vasquez and Nord. Bausher's base hit sent Sparks home to give U of L a 7-0 lead.
The Blazers put up two runs in the third when Cliffanie Engram drew a walk to set up Beth Mullins' two-run home run, making it a 7-2 contest.
U of L put the game away in the fourth when Sparks singled, Lacy Wood was hit by a pitch and Bausher singled to load the bases for Keola Calderon's first career grand slam to give the Cardinals the 11-2 lead.
Jessica Rak (9-7) picked up the win in relief, allowing two runs on one hit and striking out four in four innings. Offensively, Louisville had eight hits on the day. Bausher finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Calderon was 3-for-3 with a grand slam, four RBI and a run scored.
UAB starter Alexis Kreske (0-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs, three earned in three innings. The Blazers fall to 18-20 (3-9 C-USA).
U of L (16-14, 8-3) will play host to Western Kentucky on Sunday, April 6 at 1:00 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
