
Softball Splits UAB Doubleheader

In the first game, the teams battled through five scoreless innings before Lacy Wood singled to set up Sara Bausher two-run homer in the sixth inning, giving the Cardinals the 2-0 win.
Reliever Jessica Rak picked up the win, holding the Blazers hitless and striking out four in three innings. Starter Krystle Herold combined for the shutout, holding UAB scoreless on four hits in four innings. Offensively, the Cards had seven hits. Bausher and Keola Calderon each went 2-for-3 in the contest.
In the nightcap, U of L got on the scoreboard in the second inning when Bausher led off with a single, moved to second in a sacrifice bunt by Lisa Estes and scored on Calderon's base hit to give the Cards a 1-0 lead.
UAB responded in the top of the third when Kristin Stanfill singled, moved to second on the throw, took third on Sara Christophel's fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.
The Blazers pulled ahead 2-1 in the fourth when Kris Lara reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a Louisville error and scored on a single by Amanda Ellis.
The Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on Lisa McMillan's sacrifice bunt and scored on Aja Sherman's sacrifice fly to make the score 2-2.
The Blazers added another run in the fifth when Candice Hithe singled, moved to second on Hithe's sacrifice bunt and scored on a hit by Beth Mullins to make it a 3-2 game.
U of L responded in the sixth when Lisa McMillan laced a two-out double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Lyndsey Jordan's hit to tie the game at 3-3. A scoreless seventh sent the game into extra innings.
UAB broke the tie in the ninth when Hithe and Christophel drew back-to-back walks. Both runners advanced when Cliffanie Engram flied out. Beth Mullins' two-run single scored Hithe and Christophel to give the Blazers a 5-3 lead. A double by Lara scored Mullins for the 6-3 game.
Rak (8-7) took the loss for the Cardinals, allowing five runs, four of them earned, on five hits and struck out three in four innings. Louisville had 10 hits in the game, Calderon, McMillan and Shannon Nord each finished with two hits.
UAB's Kerri Foster (9-8) picked up the win in relief, holding the Cards scoreless and allowing one hit in 2.0 innings.
Louisville (15-14, 7-3) and UAB (18-19, 3-8) will conclude the three-game series Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
