Softball Sweeps Morehead Doubleheader

The University of Louisville softball team traveled to Morehead State and swept the Eagles 5-1 and 8-0 in a doubleheader Wednesday.
In the first game, Louisville jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Aja Sherman led off with a single, moved to second on a hit by Kristi Rozelle, took third on Alma Navarrete's base hit and crossed the plate on Lisa McMillan's fielder's choice.
Morehead responded in the bottom half of the inning when Toni Orr led off with a single, moved to third when Alison Queen reached on a Louisville error and scored on another Cardinal miscue to tie the game at 1-1.
U of L added two runs in the fifth when Keola Calderon hit a two-out single and Sherman blasted a home run to give the Cards a 3-1 lead.
Louisville added two more runs in the sixth when McMillan singled and moved to second on a hit by Michelle Vasquez. McMillan and Vasquez scored on Sara Bausher's two-run double to make it a 5-1 game.
Sherman, (2-2) the Cardinals' starting pitcher allowed one unearned run on six hits and struck out seven in seven innings pitched. Offensively, Sherman went 2-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI. Bausher also went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI. Calderon was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Vasquez was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Morehead starter Molly Cope (0-1) picked up the loss, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits and striking out one batter in six innings. Natalee Owen and Michelle McCrady each had two hits for the Eagles.
In the nightcap, the Cards scored two runs in the first inning when Sara Bausher led off with a single and took second on a base hit by Sara Nord. Both runners advanced on a Morehead error to set up Aja Sherman's two-run single.
Kristi Rozelle's solo home run in the second gave Louisville a 3-0 lead. Lisa McMillan reached on a dropped third strike. Bausher's two-run homer made the score 5-0. Shannon Nord blasted a triple and scored on a hit by Lisa Estes to increase the Cards' lead to 6-0.
Louisville added another run in the fourth when Bausher drew a walk, moved to second when Shannon Nord bunted safely, took third when Estes hit into a fielder's choice and crossed the plate on Calderon's hit.
The Cards capped off the scoring in the top of the fifth when Amy Summers led off with a double, moved to third on Rozelle's sacrifice bunt and scored on McMillan's base hit to make the score 8-0. The game ended after the fifth inning because of the eight-run mercy rule.
Louisville starter, Jessica Rak (1-2) got the shutout win, allowing three hits and striking out five in five innings. Offensively, the Cards pounded out 12 hits. Nord finished batting 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Bausher was 2-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI. Sherman was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Morehead starter Stephanie Hernandez (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs, three of them earned, on five hits in 1.1 innings. The Eagles fall to 0-2 on the season.
Louisville (3-6) will host the Red and Black Tournament March 7-9 at Ulmer Stadium. The Cards will take on Bowling Green on Friday, March 7 at 4 p.m. Illinois State and Ohio University will also compete in the tournament.
