Softball Splits with Southern Miss

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team fell to Southern Miss 2-0 in the first game and defeated the Golden Eagles 2-0 in the nightcap of a Conference USA doubleheader Saturday at Ulmer Stadium.
In the first game, the teams played through five scoreless innings before Southern Miss put up two runs in the top of the sixth. Charity Butler led off with a single and moved to second when Ashley Davis drew a walk. Amanda Brown's triple scored Butler and Kim Bishop who was pinch running for Davis for the 2-0 game.
Southern Miss starter Jessica Holaway (8-9) picked up the shutout win, allowing seven hits and striking out three in seven innings. Butler was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the game.
Louisville starter Jessica Rak (7-6) took the loss allowing two earned runs on four hits and striking out 10. Offensively, U of L outhit Southern Miss 7-4. Michelle Vasquez led the Cardinals batting 2-for-4.
In the second game, Louisville scored two runs in the third when Aja Sherman doubled and scored on a double by Vasquez. Shannon Nord followed with a single, which moved Vasquez to third. As Nord stole second, a Southern Miss error allowed Vasquez to score, making it a 2-0 game.
Louisville starter Krystle Herold (2-5) held the Golden Eagles scoreless, scattering four hits over seven innings and striking out four. Offensively, the Cards again outhit Southern Miss 8-4. Nord and Keola Calderon each finished 2-for-3 in the game.
U of L (13-13, 5-2) and Southern Miss (15-18, 3-5) will conclude the three-game series at Ulmer Stadium Sunday at noon.
