Softball Splits Evansville Doubleheader

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The University of Louisville softball team split a doubleheader with Evansville Wednesday at Evansville. The Purple Aces had a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to win the first game 2-1. The Cards capitalized on 10 hits including five doubles to win the second 5-1.
In the first game, the Aces jumped ahead in the third inning as Samantha Doner drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on Jamie Davison's hit and scored on a double by Joni Woods to give Evansville a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals tied the contest in the top of the fourth as Sara Bausher led off with a double and scored when Keola Calderon reached on a two-base error to make it a 1-1 game.
Evansville broke the tie in the bottom of the seventh when Stefanie Marlin drew a leadoff walk. Jennifer Mann, pinch-running for Marlin, took second on Davison's sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a two-out single by Brooke Luker to give the Purple Aces the 2-1 win.
Louisville starter Jessica Rak (7-5) took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned on five hits and striking out six in seven innings. Offensively, Lacy Wood was 2-for-3 in the game.
Evansville reliever Katie Markle got the win, holding the Cards scoreless on one hit in 3 innings. Doner finished 2-for-3 in the game.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Michelle Vasquez led off with a double and scored on double by Nicole Sparks.
Louisville added two more runs in the fourth as Lisa McMillan reached on a fielder's choice and crossed the plate on a double by Alma Navarrete. Lacy Wood's single moved Navarrete to third and she scored on a base hit by Vasquez to make it a 3-0 game.
U of L added another run in the fifth when Lisa Estes led off with a walk and scored on a double by Keola Calderon to give the Cards a 4-0 lead.
The Cardinals added a final run in the seventh as Shannon Nord singled to lead off the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sparks and came home on Bausher's double for the 5-0 advantage.
Evansville's Trish Wetzel put the Aces on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh for the 5-1 game.
Louisville starter Krystle Herold (1-5) picked up the win allowing one earned run on three hits and striking out seven in seven innings. Offensively, U of L had 10 hits in the contest, Vasquez and Navarrete each finished 2-for-3.
Evansville starter Katie Markle took the loss, allowing three earned runs on six hits in 3.1 innings. The Purple Aces fall to 14-10 on the season.
U of L (12-12, 4-1 Conference USA) will return to C-USA action when they play host to Southern Miss (12-14, 2-4) Saturday, March 29 in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The teams will conclude the three-game series Sunday, March 30 at noon.
