Mark Anderson and Tim Powell put the young and struggling Cardinal lineup on their backs and led the University of Louisville men's golf team to a tie for seventh place at the El Diablo Intercollegiate hosted by Marshall University at the El Diablo Golf and Country Club in Citrus Springs, Fla.
Outside of a tournament record-setting setting round at the spring season-opening Beau Chene Classic, U of L head coach Mark Crabtree's young lineup has been unable to find the groove that saw it post a record-setting pace during the fall season and that trend continued this weekend at the El Diablo.
The Cards finished with a three-round 908, eight-over-par and 31 shots behind tournament champion Wichita State's 23-under-par 877. Although the young Cards did not receive the production they have come to expect from the top of the lineup, the balanced effort was good enough to tie for seventh place in a tough 19-team field featuring seven teams ranked among the nation's top 75 squads.
Anderson, who has struggled this spring after a blistering fall season, returned to form with a career-best six-under-par 69 in the opening round. The sophomore from Sioux Falls, S.D., followed with rounds of 78 and 76 to finish with a two-over 223, good enough to tie for 15th-place.
Freshman Tim Powell, who has come on over the final half of the fall season and the first three events of the spring, was the most conistent Cardinal, carding rounds of 73, 77 and 75 to finish with a four-over 225 and a tie for 23rd-place.
Playing in his third collegiate event, freshman Brent Holmes also had a strong showing on the difficult 7,045-yard, par 75 course as he posted rounds of 78, 76 and 78 to tie for 54th-place at 232.
Brett Jones, the '02 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, has yet to find the form that saw him post a 70.9 stroke average and rank No. 19 nationally during the fall season as he finished tied for 63rd-place with a nine-over 234. The talented sophomore carded a three-over 78 in the opening round and recovered from a tough second-round 83 with a two-under 73.
Freshman Will Hanna played catchup throughout the event as he rebounded from an opening-round 84 with rounds of 78 and 77 to finish tied for 82nd-place at 239.
