Head coach Mark Crabtree has been looking for a consistent performance from his entire lineup and he finally found the formula he was looking for as the Cards shot a final round 290 to best the 16-team field by five strokes and pull into fourth place on the final day of action at the Marshall Invitational.
Playing in harsh conditions has been commonplace for the Cards over the last two events and this time the U of L golfers plowed through the wet and windy conditions to rally from seventh place after two rounds to fourth place with a final round 290.
Crabtree was elated about his squad's performance.
"All season long I've been looking to see what this team is capable of doing when we get solid efforts out of the lineup from top to bottom," Crabtree said. "When you play consistently throughout the lineup, you don't have to ask one player to step and carry the whole team and that takes the pressure off everyone."
The fourth-year head coach was also proud of the way his young lineup, consisting of three sophomores and a freshman, battled through the tough conditions.
"It's just a testament to what this team can do when it's focused and firing on all cylinders. I'm really proud of the way we played this weekend."
Mark Anderson led the rally as his final round 70, which was the low round of the day, pushed the sophomore into a tie for third place with a three-round 213 (75-68-70), two strokes off the pace set by medallist Matt Kohn of Kentucky.
Tim Powell, the lone freshman in the playing lineup, continued to make strides as he carded a final round 74 to finish tied for 15th at 219 (73-72-74). Sophomores Brett Jones (73-76-72) and Charlie Woo (74-73-74) also turned in solid performances as Jones carded a final round 72, the third-lowest round of the day, to finish tied for 21st with Woo who carded a 74 on Saturday.
The Cards return to action at the ASU Indian Classic on April 14-15.
