The hot play that saw the Cards rise to third place after two rounds of play at the ASU Indian Classic could not be duplicated on Tuesday as the University of Louisville men's golf team slipped to 10th out of 19 teams in the final tuneup before the Conference USA Championships in Tampa, Fla., on April 21-22.
Coming off a sparkling second-round performance in which the Cards set the pace for the field with a five-over-par 289, the Cards dropped seven spots in the standings in the final round with a 24-over-par 312.
Sophomores Brett Jones and Mark Anderson were unable to carry the form that saw them both rank among the clubhouse leaders after two rounds, however, fellow sophomore Charlie Woo stayed true to form with a two-over-par 74 on Tuesday to finish tied for fifth with a one-over 217 in his finest performance of the season.
Anderson entered the day tied for 22nd place after carding rounds of 70 and 76 on Monday but could not gain ground with a final round 77 as he finished tied for 25th with a seven-over 223. Jones, who entered Tuesday tied with Woo for ninth place after carding rounds of 73 and 70, slipped to 17th with a final round 77.
Woo started the event slowly with an opening round 75, but caught fire with a season-best 68 in the second round to pull within six shots of medallist Gareth Maybin of South Alabama with a final round 74 to log his first top-five finish of the season.
Freshmen Brent Holmes and Tim Powell struggled through the first two rounds and were unable to stop that trend on Tuesday as they finished tied for 82nd and 89th-place, respectively.
