The young University of Louisville lineup gave the field at the Conference USA Men's Golf Championships all it could handle with a stunning second round performance on Tuesday, however, the Cards were unable to recapture that hot form in Wednesday's final round as they finished fifth out of 14 teams for the second straight year in one of the nation's most competitive league tournaments.
The Cards entered Wednesday's final round in fourth place, six shots behind clubhouse leader TCU after carding the low team score of the second round. The young lineup, consisting of three sophomores and a pair of freshmen, was unable to keep pace with TCU, UAB, South Florida and Houston on the final day as the Cards slipped to fifth place with a 15-over-par 289.
Sophomore Brett Jones, who set the pace for the field in the second round with a season-low 66 to pull into a tie for fourth place, slipped to a two-way tie for eighth after posting a five-over-par 76 to finish with a three-round, four-over-par 217 (75-66-76). It marks the second consecutive year that Jones, who finished tied for seventh last season as a freshman, finished among the top 10 players at the C-USA Championships.
Fellow sophomore Mark Anderson, who entered the final round tied for 10th, stayed true to the consistent form he displayed on Monday and Tuesday with a final round 73 to finish tied for 10th at five-over-par 218 (72-73-73).
Sophomore Charlie Woo and freshman Tim Powell pulled into a three-way tie for 31st place as Woo (76-71-76) carded a five-over 76 and Powell (75-75-73) carded a two-over 73 in the final round to finish with a three-round, 10-over-par 223.
Freshman Will Hanna finished the event tied for 60th as he sandwiched a pair of 77s around a second round 82 to finish with a three-round, 23-over-par 236.
Jones will look to set a new school record for single season stroke average and the Cards will look to post the top stroke average in school history for the fourth time in head coach Mark Crabtree's four-year tenure at U of L when they conclude the regular season at the Atlanta Intercollegiate on May 8-9.
