Three University of Louisville men's tennis players: Jhonny Berrido, Damar Johnson and Jakub Gustafsson have been ranked in the ITA Fall Midwest Regional rankings.
Berrido, a sophomore from LaVega, Dominican Republic is tied for 17th in the region. He is coming of a record-setting season, during which he set the school record for singles wins as a freshman with 33 and was named Conference USA Freshman of the Year. Berrido posted a 7-4 record in the 2003 fall season.
Johnson, a freshman from Ocho Rios, Jamaica steps in at No. 27 in the Midwest. He had a 3-3 singles mark in the fall, starting his collegiate career with wins over players from Wisconsin, Tennessee and Michigan.
Gustafsson, a sophomore from Hollviken, Sweden, follows Johnson at No. 28 in the region. He posted a team-best 12-2 singles record and captured the Louisville Fall Invitational during the 2003 fall season.
"It is a real compliment for our program to have three players ranked among the top 30 in the Midwest region," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "This shows the true potential of our team since the Jhonny, Damar and Jakob are underclassmen. To have half of the starting lineup achieve this honor can only get you excited about the present and future of Louisville tennis."
The Cardinals will open the 2004 spring season January 16 when they play host to Wright State at noon and Murray State at 6 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
