NEWPORT, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's rowing team, which enters the year with hopes of breaking into the nation's top 25, got off to a solid start by winning a pair of gold medals Saturday at the Head of the Licking Regatta in Newport, Ky.
The Cardinals won both the gold and silver medals in the Women's Open 4+ race. The Cards' "B" boat won the 13-team race with a time of 20:34.60, finishing 30 seconds ahead of the U of L "A" squad.
In the Women's Open 8+ race, Louisville blew away the four-team field with a first-place time of 18:58.10, more than two minutes ahead of the runner-up crew.
Sophomore Brooke Spence raced in the Women's Open Singles competition and finished second with a time of 24:40.30.
"We went the event to race in multiple races in a short amount of time in order to prepare for the upcoming fall season," said head coach Richard Ruggieri. "I am pleased with the rowing, yet we still need to continue to improve throughout the rest of the fall."
Louisville returns to action Saturday when the Cards travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the LemonHead Regatta.
